Car Chases and Fake Bologna: The Life and Times of an American Youth
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (April, 2002)

Support The Up and Coming!!
For once a real story of youthCar Chases and Fake Bologna, which quickly became a favorite read of mine, finally tells the real story of what life is like for an american youth. The experiences, stories and emotions feel so real because they are real, not semi-true memories of long ago. I found myself laughing, feeling lighthearted and sorrowful throughout the whole book and it was so easy to connect to the author. So many of her emotions were the same that I was experiencing but still the author was so original and creative kept me turning the page for more. As I said before this is one of my favorite books and I highly recommend Car Chases and Fake Bologna for anyone looking for a refreshing, sincere, and often humerous take on the real life of america's youth.
An adult view of a child's lifeI have read and reread this book and find it utterly fascinating. It is an insight into the mind of an American youth, but it is not a childish book, nor does it suffer the revisionist flaws of an adult reminiscing about their youth. It is a collection of thoughts written by a young girl with the ability to communicate her feelings. The poetry ranges from silly to passionate and back again (I love "Demon Girl"). It is a very good read, but be careful, she will charm you - after all, she is a witch.

How Wall Street Works: The Basics and Beyond (The Investor's Quick Reference)
Published in Paperback by Probus Pub Co (February, 1992)
Average review score:

License to StealLicense to Steal is an excellent book. I found it very easy to read. The book offers a persoanl account of a wall street broker that works in various large and small houses. The author takes you through an account of the "innner-workings" of the Manhattan stock boker's world. The author seems compelled to give the audience an account of the lawless nature of some of the biggest brokers.
Excellent for new investorsThis book is good at explaining investments in a way I can understand. Best suited for new investors who need basic help.
An excellent book for new investorsThis is an easy-to-understand book about investing. I don't think experienced investors would learn a lot, but people such as myself who are relatively new to the game will find it very valuable.

This book is good, but not great.Barbara Michaels seems to have no new ideas, if you've read a couple of her books, there is no need to read this one, it is a variation of all her other books.
My one and favorite authorI've read almost all of Barbara Michaels books, and I've never had to put one down yet. She's my favorite author.
THis Barbara Michaels at her best! This story is Barbara Michaels at her best. The story moves along fast and keeps you wanting more, you never suspect what the out come will be. There are many plot twists that will surprise even the most avid Michaels fans. This is one of my favorites.

Elvis, Hank, and Me: Making Musical History on the Louisiana Hayride
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (June, 1998)
Average review score:

A down-home look at the early years of the country bizHorace Logan was the emcee and program director for the famed "Louisiana Hayride," a nationally broadcast weekly radio show that for the better part of the 1950s was the main competitor of the "Grand Ole Opry." Known as "the cradle of the stars," the Hayride had a reputation for developing hot new talent, and has long been an object of fascination for me since it was here that Webb Pierce got his start. As the main creative director of the Hayride, Logan's path intersected those of many top-flight hick musicians, including Webb, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, Kitty Wells, Jim Reeves and a slew of others whose careers took off when they became regulars on the show. This book concentrates the bulk of its effort towards two oft-mythologized stars whose lives are amply documented elsewhere - Hank Williams and Elvis Presley -- and while it's cool to get insights from a person who helped start both their careers, in a sense the book feels like a missed opportunity, since Logan must have had plenty more to say about the "early" days when country music made the transition from rinky-dink local operations into a major industry with a nationwide scope. He broke into the business at the tail end of a period when all the action was on local radio stations, and helped usher in the era when things became increasingly professionalized and big-league. While the book is very readable, it's unfortunate that Logan and his ghost-writer, Bill Sloan, didn't see fit to explore "the old days" a little bit more, and bring out more of the flavor of what the hick music business was like back when. It's understandable that they would emphasize the bankable big boys like Elvis and Hank, but considering how much has already been written about them, the "witness to history" approach doesn't add as much to the historical lore as more under-the-radar observations might have. In short, it would've been cool if the story had been more about Logan himself, and the world he saw, and not simply about the stars that lived in it. Still, Hayride enthusiasts should definitely check this one out!
ALMOST AS GOOD AS TALKING TO THE PERFORMES THEMSELVESI grew up in east Texas, and listening to country music during the late 40's and 50's ,along with rock and roll.We would listen to the radio and the Louisiana Hayride was one of several saturday night music programs that we listened to. this book "Elvis Hank and Me" was a plesant suprise, I found the book to be easy and informative reading. 'Hoss' Logan, gives you a warm and personal glimse into the everyday lives of some of the biggest stars to ever come along. Thanks 'Hoss'. If you start this book , you'll finish it.
A "MUST" for fans of Elvis, Hank and other super stars.Being a country music disc jockey for almost a half-century as well as a song-writer and columnist, I found Horace Logan's "Elvis, Hank and Me" a genuine "refresher", a work of true art that not only informs but captures the attention of the reader by revealing the raw facts pertaining to the entertainment industry and the rough and rowdy trails many of the super-stars blazed in order to make the marquees of big-time show business. Horace mentions in this book the fact we toiled together for awhile at a radio station in the Dallas/Fort Worth market. He always had a most-interesting story to tell on the air. Now, many of those true, interesting and oft-times sad tales have been put into print for true enjoyment. -Bill Mack (Grammy winning songwriter of LeAnn Rimes', "BLUE"; Radio's "Midnight Cowboy", heard nightly on the "Bill Mack Trucking Network", and host on "Country Crossroads", syndicated nationally each week on radio & television.)

Motherwit: An Alabama Midwife's Story

Trying to Decide the Way to Have My BabyIn 1996, while pregnant with my first child, I was researching the different options available to me for childbirth. I read book after book, borrowing them one after another from my local library. Only in my first trimester, I had already been told by my OBGyn that I had a 1 in 4 chance of C-Section "just because that's the way it is." There HAD to be another way, so I searched. Then I came upon THIS book. Far from being an argument for a method or an analytical textbook, Motherwit was an intensely tender, human story that made childbirth come alive for me. This book fed my soul as I laughed and cried my way through it. When I was done, I knew how I wanted my baby to come into this world: with a midwife. I've never forgotten it... and after all these years, 2 children later, I'm buying my own copy, so my daughter can read it too, when her time comes. I'd rather have a woman like Onnie there with me, than any Ph.D. Both of my children were born peacefully. Both came with the help of midwives like Onnie Lee.
A MOTIVATING AND INSPIRING BOOKAS AN ASPIRING MIDWIFE AND FELLOW CHRISTIAN I WAS AMAZED AT THE CANDOR AND EASE WITH WHICH LOGAN LED US THROUGH 70 YEARS OF HER LIFE. HER STORIES TAUGHT WAYS TO DEAL WITH PROBLEMS THAT ARISE OCCASIONALLY DURING NORMAL HOME BIRTH. HER CONSTANT DEVOTION TO GOD WAS VERY UPLIFTING!
A GemI loved reading about the life of this fascinating woman

Ambiguous Lives: Free Women of Color in Rural Georgia 1789-1879
Published in Paperback by Univ of Arkansas Pr (December, 1993)
Average review score:

A "Mulatto" History, Not a "Black" OneWhile the author slavishly subscribes to hypodescent, she provides good historical detail on how the privileged social and educational opportunities of Southern multiracials were due to their often close ties with whites fathers and other relatives (as opposed to the myth of the callous white rapist slavemaster "breeding" more slaves). These privileges created the myth that mulattoes and mixed-whites were the "flower of the colored race." These "mulatto elites" filled the "Negro" colleges and universities and reinforced the idea that intelligence comes from "white blood." When you recognize this history, you can see why many people still make the ridiculous claim that losing non-blacks to a "multiracial" or "white" category will somehow destroy all the progress that "blacks" have made. Many of them probably still have the tacit belief that intelligence comes from "white blood."
A look at another African American lifestyleThis book was an eye-opener in that we get to view another way of African American lifestyle that many of us are unaware, black as well as white. Slavery forced us into a divide and conquer theory among blacks but Ms. Logan Alexander's family never forgot their African heritage and dedicated themselves to uplift the race leaving a legacy that is still intact. I recommend this book and look forward to reading her new book, Homelands and Waterways.
The book is an excellent book on her family memoriesMiss Alexander book will help me with my own family history. The Barnes family of Hancock County Ga. Which were also freed people of color. Many thanks to you Ms. Alexander!!!! You have done a excellent job!!!

EVERYTHING IN ITS PATH

Excellent description of a tragic disaster in West Va.Excellent descriptions of how survivors dealt with the total destruction of everything they had built and accomplished in their entire lives. All of this was taken from them by a "man made" damn and wall of water within minutes. Mr. Erikson did a wonderful job of relating to the people from the coal camps and realizing what their lives had been about......he truely shows the suffering involved in this disaster.
An excellent description of the disaster and its' effectsOne of the better books I've read detailing the issues involved in natural disasters and their aftermath. Erikson describes in detail what the survivors went through and how they dealt with the destruction of their community.
Sociology mustThis was an excellent book, well-written and informative. Using Buffalo Creek as the fulcrum, Erikson provides readers with a good introduction of communities and trauma. It is interesting to note the similarities and differences between the aftermaths of Sept 11 and Buffalo Creek. Erikson's book is a must read for social scientists and anyone interested in creative non-fiction writing.

First Course in the Finite Element Method Using Algor
Published in Hardcover by Brooks Cole (26 February, 1997)
Average review score:

Nothing Great about itI have used this book as Beginner of FEA and didn't find it interesting. It deals with more theoretical aspects of FEA. It does really deal with using FEA on a regular basis. May be it's the person who taught the class made me disinterested in the book... others might find it interesting. I believe that the Theory behind FEA is important before even you start working on the software, but this is not the book I would recommend to read before you start.
The best introductory book written in finite element methodThe chapters are very well organized. The material is very easy to understand. There are several fully worked out problems in each chapter that gives a solid foundation of the theory discussed in that chapter. Variational methods and Galerkin formulations are very well explained in a manner that is very easy to understand. Although most of the concentration is on solid mechanics and heat transfer, there is a brief introduction to cfd. Overall, this book is a must, if you are planning to continue you studies in applied mechanics or related fields. I sincerely hope that the author Daryl.L. Logan has plans to write a similar book in Non-Linear Finite Element Analysis.
Logic, language and notations have made all the difference.Topics builds up in a logical order. The language
used through out is stimulating and easy to
understand. Mathematical notations are straight
forward.
This book is a must have for both begginners and the seasoned professionals who do Finite
Element Analyis.

Guide to the National Park Areas - Eastern States (4th Ed)
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (April, 1997)
Average review score:

East of the MississippiThe National Parks of the Eastern U.S. are lovely and important historic areas, and deserve attention by all travellers to these regions. The Guide to the National Park Areas provides a short overview of each of these areas, including the lesser-known parks in each of the states. For travellers who simply want to know what is available, and what is there, this is a fine resource. However, the book does little more than list the places and tell you a bit about them. Significantly more research would be necessary in order to plan a trip to any of these places or to get much out of a visit.
A helplful guide if you plan to travel eastWe found the fifth edition of this guide to be very helpful during a recent East Coast visit. The thing that impressed me most was the inclusion of smaller park areas we would ordinarily skip or miss simply because we didn't know about them. In fact, we found many of the smaller park areas (Fort Caroline in Jacksonville, FL) to be very interesting. We highly recommend this guide if you are thinking about taking in the east. We also found the western edition very helplful during our summer trip.
Resourceful, Remarkable, Recommended¿.It goes without saying that the national parks east of the Mississippi River are both scenic and chronicled with historical lore. David and Kay Scott, experienced campers and authors of The Guide to the National Park Areas: Eastern States, corroborate those claims, substantially and naturally! Accompanying the detailed maps and essential travel information are concise statements about facilities, camping, and fishing for the eastern national park sites. This revision is even more serviceable than the earlier releases! The book is truly outstanding--illustrating the gift of America to its populace!
Her first published collection, Marie's Book of Spells, wasn't really to my taste but this is exactly the sort of thing I like to see. A peek into the mind of an American youth through poems and journal entires. Always honest and vastly entertaining. I'm eagerly waiting to see what she comes out with next.
